SYM Statement of Faith
Founded on a love for our neighbor that extends beyond barriers of class, housing status, race, gender, sexuality, or any other socially dividing identity, we at SYM are committed to serving the Lord Jesus Christ through our faithfulness to the call found in Matthew 25:31–46:
“Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world, for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’
Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’
And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me.’"
We believe Jesus Christ identifies with the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized, and we consider it an honor and privilege to love Jesus in the young people we serve through our programs. We are committed to partnering with the unhoused and at-risk young people of the U District to the best of our abilities, regardless of their religious beliefs, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
We affirm our Christian identity with the following statement of faith:
We believe in the almighty triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Rev. 1:8; Matt. 3:16-17; John 10:30).
We believe that Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection fulfilled God’s plan of redemption for humanity, rescuing us from the bondage of sin, death, and division (1 Cor. 15:13; 1 Peter 3:18).
We believe that God deeply loves all people and they are worthy of our love (Romans 5:8, 11:28-32, 14:7-11).
We believe the Bible is God's inspired, authoritative word (2 Tim. 3:16).
We believe that Christians are the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:27), and that we have been tasked with doing the work of Jesus until his return (1 John 2:6; John 13:15; Matt. 25:45-46).
