Happy New Year from SYM Staff (+ Obi) As 2025 rolls out, a reflection of 2024 during which SYM: * DOUBLED participation in Drop-in Center compared to 2023 * began the Breakfast Program in partnership with other University District Service Providers
* expanded Drop-In Center hours to 10am - 1pm Monday through Friday to cover gaps in service in the neighborhood * innumerable specific and individual interactions between clients, volunteers and staff (and the SYM doggos)
As we turn the calendar to 2025 we are looking forward to maintaining our existing programs - Breakfast Program, Coffee Run, and the Drop-In Center as well as providing Case Management and Activities and Outings for the young adults experiencing homelessness and unstable housing in the University District. YOUR involvement in support of SYM is so appreciated and seen in the successes and accomplishments of those that walk through our doors. |

Case Management at SYM Blog Post by Grace Zakula

Reflection from Grace ---
In the past 4 months since I started as Case Manager at SYM, one of the main things I have learned is that case management looks different for every client. For some it may be overcoming the financial barrier of getting an ID card; for others it’s helping navigate often daunting systems like SSA and DSHS, and some clients just need someone to walk with them on their journey. Although all clients' needs and stories are vastly different, an experience that many share is feelings of confusion, frustration, and sometimes hopelessness as they navigate complex social systems. As case manager, my hope is to help provide support and resources to alleviate some of the burden that comes with finding a path to healing alone.

SYM is appreciative of the two college students that will be on staff as interns from January - June. These two have already started this week and have shown us their strengths and curiosity, which portends well for the next six months. Will joins us through the UW UCBI program. This is the 3rd year for SYM to be blessed by an intern from this program, which supports interns so well. In addition, the Doorway Project is covering the cost of an SYM intern for the 3rd year!
Kiri applied on her own through the SPU Psychology Department. Her initiative is so appreciated and we love the partnership with SPU! |

Union Church
Thank you to Union Church for giving our clients the opportunity to open Christmas gifts this holiday season! The church stocked these with hygiene products, cold weather resources, candy and more! |

University Presbyterian Church As happens with many of the converted houses in the U District, our office requires occasional attention and sometimes larger-scale maintenance. The team at UPC is always here for us to keep our building safe and operational. Huge thank you and shoutout to them! |

Volunteer Opportunities
Besides our need for volunteers in programs, we also need another volunteer for Admin Help! Come by the SYM office once / week for a couple hours to do some data entry, organizing, etc. |
