In May, SYM staff, interns, and volunteers took a group of clients to the zoo! It was a beautiful day, and activities like these encourage presence and engagement with the world beyond the constant focus on survival that our young people experience. |

“D” has been a consistent participant in Breakfast Program and Drop-in Center throughout the last several months. In addition to coming to these programs, D is participating in Brothers in Action, a small group of young men that meet two weeks per month after Drop-In to support each other and discuss progress and hardships in their lives.
D’s dream is to develop as a hip-hop artist, and he regularly gets clothes for his upcoming shows from Drop-In. He has also been consistent in attending court-ordered anger management classes and comes by for support and to debrief those classes. For D, SYM is a key resource for support as he seeks to build a positive future. |

Staff Updates: Book Club! |
|
|
SYM Staff Book Club continues this summer with the reading of "Trauma Stewardship" by Laura van Dernoot Lipsky: “We can do meaningful work in a way that works for us and for those we serve,” Lipsky writes. “Taking care of ourselves while taking care of others allows us to contribute to our societies with such impact that we will leave a legacy informed by our deepest wisdom and greatest gifts instead of burdened by our struggles and despair." Each week at Staff Meeting, we discuss a section of the book and are joined by Ryther therapist, Chris, who offers additional insight into second-hand trauma and how to keep doing the work we do.

Jack Hanscom-Roedel has been an intern and part-time staff member with SYM for the past 3 years, working as a vital addition to our program teams. Jack is graduating from the University of Washington where he studied Applied Computational and Mathematical Science. He also minored in Philosophy. In the future, he is hoping to train for an Ironman while he applies to grad school and is open to any work in the STEM field if an opportunity presents itself. Jack is kind, considerate and intelligent and has been a blessing to the SYM team. He's staying on over the summer, and we are thrilled to see where he goes from there! Congratulations, Jack!

"Stewardship [is defined as] 'taking care in a way that takes full and balanced account of the interests of society, future generations, and other species, as well as of private needs, and accepts significant answerability to society.'" |
- Richard Worrell and Michael Appleby, as quoted by Laura van Dernoot Lipsky in "Trauma Stewardship". |
